Questions & Answers

Question: What is the Crown & Glory Technique?

Answer: It is a technique on how to handle African decent hair in order to reach its full potential growth whether the hair is natural or processed.

Question: Where did you get The Crown & Glory Technique?

Answer: From a very clear surprising dream, which I believe, was God inspired.

Question: Why is it that it seems our hair does not get past the shoulders?

Answer: The hair will get past the shoulders. Remember that Afro hair has a regimen of its own as far as growing the hair longer. The hair does not get past the shoulders because the ends are sweeping the shoulders (clothes). Since Afro decent hair is dry by nature, the friction of the hair being on the shoulder making contact with your clothing is vulnerable to breakage, but if you wear your hair up when it is nearing the shoulders or have it braided during this stage, your hair will get past shoulder length.

Question: I have 4a/4b hair texture; can I achieve the same hair growth without wearing braid extensions wearing my natural 4a hair?

Answer: Yes, If you're healthy and eating nutritious foods or taking supplements that are potent. The Afro Detangler will help you maintain and grow your hair longer without the excessive breakage and dryness.

Question: My Hair Tangles so much especially when I shampoo it. Do you have any suggestions on how to avoid so much breakage?

Answer: Yes, You can section your hair in loose braids and shampoo your hair.. See this link. Shampoo your hair using the Shampoo Regimen.

Question: I heard that the bun breaks off your hair. Is this true?

Answer: Yes, if you twist the bun too tight. If this is a hair style that you wear all the time and the bun is twisted too tight, then you will notice that your hair will not look full when worn down but thinner where the twist began.

Question: My hair breaks off every time it grows an inch. What could this be?

Answer: Your hair may not have enough moisture in the strands. You may need to deep condition your hair weekly. There could be excessive stress in our life. Stress dries out your hair and skin. Also there may be chemistry changes in your body such as menopause. Other factors are: birth control pills, immune deficiency, change in medication, heavy medications, lack of important vitamin and minerals, poor food diet, excessive coffee drinking, excessive alcohol drinking, cigarette smoking, rough combing, using hair products that strip natural oils from your hair, not shampooing your hair on a regular basis, chlorine from the swimming pool, certain no-lye relaxers, bleaching and dyeing the hair frequently, applying a relaxer over an older relaxer instead of just the new growth. Leaving a relaxer on your hair too long.

Question: I have 4a/4b hair. When I wear braid extensions, my hair breaks off where the new growth starts. Could you give me any information on how I could prevent this?

Answer: Yes. A hair vitamin will strengthen your hair strands and applying a leave-in hair strengthener such as Infusium23 and a light braid spray, such as African Royale braid spray to the scalp area, lightly, right after you have shampooed and towel squeezed your hair. This will help prevent the breakage. These products should be applied to the scalp area only once a week-as excessive oils and conditioners on the scalp and base of your braids will make it too difficult to take out your extensions. Also look at this link on demarcation

Question: Isn't long hair hereditary?

Answer: Extremely long hair is hereditary, but hair that grows 12 inches to 24 or even 28 inches is normal. Ordinarily your hair can grow 6-10 inches a year and sometimes more. I believe Afro textured hair can be that long or longer if you are re-educated on how to grow your hair longer

Question: Why is 4a/4b hair so dry?

Answer: Afro textured hair is a bit dry by nature, but more of the dryness has to do with what is lacking in your diet and using products that do not add moisture to the hair strands. Also not understanding the care of relaxers and perms can cause even more dryness.

Question: Robin, what is your hair type?

Answer: 4a/4b and little 3c.

Question: Is there another hairstyle besides braid extensions that I can wear to grow out my natural hair?

Answer: Yes, a natural, a relaxed style, or cornrows and twists.

Question: Can I wear extensions over my relaxer?

Answer: Yes, for a short period of time, no longer than 2 months and follow the Crown & Glory Technique. I do not suggest that you wear extensions over a NO-LYE Relaxer unless the NO-LYE relaxer is not a drying NO-LYE relaxer.

Question: How long do I wait to put the braid extensions back in after a relaxer?

Answer: Ordinarily 4 weeks or more if you prefer. Deep condition your hair weekly (Le Kair's cholesterol Plus I recommend) Do this for 4 weeks or more if you prefer. Then check for elasticity in your strands before you apply a relaxer. If you cannot wait 4 weeks, see the demarcation link. If you have a natural afro 4a 4b, use the Afro Detangler you may not have to wait to put the braids back in since it deep conditions instantly. Your strands may be in good enough condition to put your braid extensions back in sooner.

Check For Elasticity In Your Strands

Hold a couple of hair strands and slightly stretch. It should not snap. Allow the strand to slowly spring back. Test the strands in the most vulnerable areas: near the nape of the neck, right in the center back of your crown, right above the ears. If these strands spring back, then your hair has elasticity. Your strands are healthy. Still keep in mind to have a professional look at the condition of your hair before you apply relaxers, heat, braid extension, or any chemical applications.

Question: My hair line is gone. Can I get it back?

If your hair is damaged because of tight braids it can come back but it will take a while. The follicle may be shocked and need rest. During this time you can massage DILUTED pure essential oils such as tea tree oil and peppermint to stimulate this section. Only a dermatologist or Trichologist will know if your follicles are truly dead. Follicles can be revived with time by giving your scalp a rest. A full wig and wig cap lined with satin will help you rest your scalp and follicles. Remove the wig daily so your scalp can breathe. If your hairline is gone due to getting older, foti root extract can bring in your hair line in a bit. If your hair line is gone due to sponge rollers, your hair can come in if you stop wearing them and leave this area alone only by shampooing and brushing. Visit a dermatologist or Trichologist to determine if this area can be revived.

Question: Why do I have dandruff when I keep my scalp lean?

Dry Scalp and Dandruff

Answer: These problems may mean a zinc deficiency; Omega 3 fatty acids help to prevent dry skin and a flaking scalp. Foods that are naturally oily such as sardines, mackerel, trout, salmon and herring prevent dandruff. If dandruff and scalp problems persist in spite of using shampoos and eating the right foods, consult your Dermatologist or Trichologist (hair and scalp doctor).

Question: Do you still wear braids?

Answer: Yes braid extensions. I wear them every summer.

Question: Do you have a book out?

Answer: No, the web site growafrohairlong.com is an ongoing copyrighted book. It is free information to handle and grow your hair. It is free because some people in foreign countries cannot afford or get access of books and sales from the US.

Whose products do you recommend?

Affirm LYE relaxer (not fiber guard since I get emails that it feels like a no lye relaxer) Design Essentials Lye relaxer, Motions Lye relaxer the original one, wanakee's oil for the hair, Le kair Cholesterol plus, African Royale And African Pride braid sprays, Creme Of Nature shampoo, Sebastian Laminates clarifying shampoo, Natures Own Foti Root Extract, Infusium 23 leave-in hair strengthener. Surge, Alphogee deep conditioner system, Abba Moisturescentsations (if you have a NO LYE RELAXER) some of these products are salon grade and some are less expensive however, they do contribute to more manageable hair. Some less expensive products work better than more expensive ones.

Why do people switch products?

Sometimes it is because of build up of using the same product frequently. Sometimes a clarifying shampoo is needed, and then the product will react the same as before
